Mal’akh Infiltrates the Smithsonian Support Center and Kills Trish

The Lost Symbol

Mal’akh’s infiltration of the Smithsonian Museum Support Center turns Trish Dunne’s routine escort of a supposed visitor into a calculated breach of the facility. Disguised as Dr. Abaddon, he uses Trish’s access and knowledge to reach SMSC Pod 3, then kills her and takes the credentials he expects will let him enter Katherine Solomon’s secure storage area. The murder is both a personal attack and a practical step in his effort to get at Katherine’s research.

The Visitor and the Facility

When Trish meets Dr. Abaddon in the lobby, his tailored suit, tanned face, and neatly combed blond hair make him seem more accustomed to privilege than to a scientific collection. He is momentarily caught off guard to find that Katherine has sent her assistant to receive him. He quickly recovers, however, and Trish takes him through the visitor checkpoint, where he passes through a metal detector and receives a temporary security badge. His genial manner helps the encounter resemble an ordinary visit rather than an intrusion.

Trish has practical reasons for accompanying him: Katherine asked her to bring him to the laboratory, and she tells the guard to send Peter Solomon to the lab when he arrives. She also explains the building’s security as they walk. Cameras record the central corridor continuously, while entry to rooms requires a key card and PIN. The facility’s protections extend beyond theft: it freezes refuse to prevent insect infestations and uses an enclosed dead zone between double walls as a barrier around the building. In describing these systems, Trish gives her guest a working account of how the center is organized and what kind of access its secured spaces require.

At the end of the corridor, Trish identifies Katherine and Peter’s lab as SMSC Pod Five. But Mal’akh stops at the window of SMSC Pod 3, where the preserved Giant Squid (Architeuthis) is kept in more than three thousand gallons of ethanol. Trish explains that the female specimen measures over forty feet. Mal’akh acts absorbed by the sight and asks to see it, giving Trish a reason to use her key card and PIN to let him into the pod. What appears to be spontaneous curiosity is an opportunity to move away from the main corridor and its cameras.

The Attack in SMSC Pod 3

Inside the dim pod, Mal’akh pays little attention to the collection. He scans the walls for cameras and finds one trained on the entrance. Trish, by contrast, continues her tour and leads him to the squid tank. She opens its lid and switches on the display lights so he can see the specimen. While she talks about the creature, Mal’akh waits for the moment to act.

Trish senses that something is wrong and begins to end the visit, but Mal’akh seizes her and demands the PIN associated with her key card. She first warns him that security can see them, though she knows they are beyond the cameras’ view. When he repeats the demand, she struggles and scratches his face. The marks expose the disguise: beneath the damaged makeup are dark tattoos. The visitor she had escorted as Dr. Abaddon is Mal’akh.

Mal’akh forces Trish to give him the PIN. She supplies 0804 and explains that it is her birthday, August 4. He then kills her by pushing her beneath the liquid in the tank. The scene’s movement from tour to attack is abrupt, but the preparation has been deliberate: the detour has brought them to a secluded room, and the card and PIN have become the object of his demand. Afterward, he places Trish’s body in the tank and closes it, concealing the killing among the preserved specimens.

Motive and Immediate Consequences

Mal’akh takes Trish’s key card and keeps the PIN, treating the pair as a means of access rather than merely as evidence of the attack. His plan depends on reaching Katherine’s data-storage room, which he expects to be difficult to enter. Peter has indicated that the storage area is secure; Mal’akh therefore anticipates that Katherine might otherwise have to be pressured into unlocking it. Trish’s credentials give him another route and, in his calculation, spare him the need to bend Katherine to his will for access.

The murder also removes a witness who has seen through neither the disguise nor the true purpose of the visit until it is too late. Mal’akh notices that his makeup has been badly damaged, but concludes that it no longer matters: by the time Katherine understands what has happened, he expects to have gained the advantage he needs. The confidence is tied to a specific practical gain, the key card and its matching code, and to the time it buys him before the deception is recognized.

Significance in the Plot

The episode makes the Smithsonian Museum Support Center’s careful systems of protection part of the action. Its cameras, secured rooms, and visitor procedures establish that entry is controlled, yet Mal’akh exploits the trust built into an escorted visit. Trish’s explanation of the building’s safeguards becomes an unintended map of its vulnerabilities: the central corridor is watched, but a visitor who is admitted and accompanied can be led into a space outside that surveillance.

The preserved squid gives the encounter its particular setting and sharpens the contrast between the institution’s work and Mal’akh’s purpose. The facility stores vulnerable specimens under controlled conditions; Mal’akh uses one of those collections to hide a human death and takes an employee’s credentials to pursue Katherine’s research. Trish’s ordinary professional cooperation is turned against her, while the account of the center’s security shifts from background description to a direct part of the plot. Her death supplies Mal’akh with access he expects to need and leaves Katherine’s laboratory in greater danger.
